The Summer

Well, what a summer! The weather up here has been wonderful and with our heavy land, grass has been abundant.

We cancelled our attendance at a number of events due to the shortage or livestock, but hopefully we have managed to keep our regular customers happy. Availability will improve from now on and we have plenty planned for next year.

We are attending the Food Festival Nantwich, Cheshire from 26th to 28th September. This a new event for us - a leap into the unknown! I hope the good weather continues.

Other major news. We have decided to set up a separate company to run the Meat side of our business. I am afraid at present it is rather unimaginatively called Hallsford Butchery ltd (HBL). John R Beattie who currently works for us is joining the business as a shareholder. John and his parents will also be producing Beef Shorthorn cross animals for HBL.

This is a great development. As you know we are paranoid about quality and service, and John's enthusiasm, energy and attention to detail will continue to be a great asset and help us move the business forward with our own butchery and other initiatives. Watch this space!

  The Farms

Our beef is top quality Shorthorn or Shorthorn sired. All our animals are raised on either Hallsford or Dorreyfield farms. These small family run farms are in a beautiful part of Cumbria that not many people see, north of Hadrian’s wall, south of the border.

Our production is non-intensive, largely grass based, although the cattle are finished on barley.

At Hallsford, it has been a great year for silage and we have plenty to carry us through the winter. Our continued use of red clover as a high protein forage crop is paying off. We get high quality silage, good grazing for fattening lambs (akin to rocket fuel) and it also provides tonnes of nitrogen for the accompanying rye grass. Red Clover also has a sizable tap root which helps improve the soil structure.
